Teaching and Lecturing
I have over 35 years of teaching experience at University level, mainly to postgraduate students of the medical and veterinary sciences. My PhD students have come from all parts of the world, many of whom are now working in senior academic postions as full professors with several successfully achieving directorship appointments in their own countries.
I have also undertaken numerous short courses aimed at increasing awareness of infectious diseases, especially those now regarded as emerging infections. I have taught short courses on infectious diseases, their diagnosis and control, on all six continents. Instutions where I have had the privilige to teach include: Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt; University of Adelaide, Australia; Federal University, Caracas, Venezuela. I am presently a senior visiting scholar at Fudan University, Shanghai, China.
Fundamental to my teaching ethos is developing the capcity of students to think through problems: when faced with the unexpected it is vital that students learn how to immediately integrate their specialist services with public health officers and other specialties in order to develop rational and robust inefectious disease control measures. I am passionate about developing the capacity to act independently and to have the best possible local expertise available for diagnosis and treatment.
