My Academic Interests and Activities

Currently I am Professor of Microbiology and Vice-Principal for Strategic Development at the Royal Veterinary College, a constituent college of the University of London.

My scientific interests focus on persistent virus infections, how they arise, and how they can be treated, with particular emphasis on viral hepatitis B. Colleagues and I have studied the antigenic composition of the hepatitis B viral proteins, related these to the human immunological response, and used this knowledge to design novel immunogens that may overcome some of the deficiencies of presently used vacccines. In parallel, we have been studying how the virus undergoes change in an endemic population inn The Gambia, West Africa, as a result of progressive introduction of vaccination for children.

During my time at the Research Institute of Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, I pursued studies together with Dr Michael Buchmeier exploring the mechanisms of virus neutralisation by antibodies in the laboratory of Dr Michael Oldstone, particularly in relation to arenavirus pathogenesis.

More recently, my colleagues and I have embarked on a series of studies with the aim of developing a DNA vaccine against Spring Viremia of Carp virus, a significant pathogen of carp that may have economic consequences if introduced into farmed fish stock.
