ABOUT Me

I am a microbiologist, having spent some 35 years researching and teaching on human and animal viruses, the infections they cause, and how they may be prevented by vaccination. I was nearly 20 years at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a postgraduate medical school of the University of London. During this period, I spent a sabbatical at the Research institute of Scripps Clinic, La Jolla, USA and was appointed as the Director of the WHO Collaborating Laboratory for Viral Hepatitis in succession to Professor Arie Zuckerman. I founded a postgraduate teaching course (MSc in Virology) for those wishing to learn more of the principles and practice of virology.

In 1991 I joined the Royal Veterinary College of London University as Professor of Microbiology and Head of the Department of Pathology and Infectious Diseases. I was promoted to Vice-Principal for Research in 1997 and now as Vice-Principal for Strategic Development I am responsible for business development and issues realting to international development, with an empahsis on China and the Far East.

In 2001 I founded the London BioScience Innovation Centre, London's first incubator for start up companies in the Life Sciences. A wholly owned company of the Royal Veterinary College, the Centre is located within refurbished laboratories on the Camden Campus. The Centre aims to foster the interactions between scientists from the RVC and other London colleges and institutions and the business community.

Over the past five years, I have developed a separate strand of academic activity relating to entrepreneurship and technology transfer: I now receive regular invitations as a key note speaker at international conferences in this subject area.

In addition, I fulfill a number of managerial and director responsibilities with the following organisations:
